The Defend NGOs Alliance welcomes the dismissal of the civil forfeiture case against our national spokesperson Jazmin “Minet” Aguisanda-Jerusalem, who is also the Director of the Leyte Center for Development, Inc. (LCDe) and former Chairperson of the Citizens’ Disaster Response Network. The case was heard at RTC Branch 28, Manila City Hall, in relation to a forfeiture order issued by the Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC).
This victory is not the end of the line for the battle against shrinking civic spaces, however. Particularly for Ms. Jerusalem, this comes amid ongoing legal battles such as the terrorism financing charge in May 2024. Although the Tacloban Prosecutors’ Office initially dropped the first terrorism financing charge in December 2024, it was later revived following an appeal by the Philippine National Police.
In the words of Ms. Jerusalem, “We do have to go on even despite all these judicial attacks. Tayong mga development workers, humanitarian workers, human rights defenders– we have to go on serving our people. We are leaving a huge gap by being hindered by these attacks, and our people need us."
"We will forge onward with this fight, we have to gather up all our courage– not only for ourselves, but for the people we serve. Padayon!”#
