Shrinking Civic Spaces on the 4th year of the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA)

On July 2, 2024, civil society organizations raised the alarm on increasing attacks on non-governmental organizations and people's organizations as the ATA hits its 4th year under the Marcos Jr. administration.

The anti-terrorism law is being used to violate the rights of those it is supposed to protect. To date, human rights group Karapatan has documented at least 112 human rights defenders with criminal complaints or charges under the ATA (RA 11479) or anti-terrorist financing law (RA 10168).

The Supreme Court has ruled that red-tagging, villification, labeling and guilt by association threatens a person's right to life, liberty or security-- we call on the government to heed the calls against the abuse of anti-terrorism laws and for the abolition of legislations weaponized to attack human rights defenders, farmers, religious leaders and journalists.
